: laundry room conversations :

In hopes of a due turn to laundry, thank you for writing.

the whirly girl

Being the new girl is dicey. You need to be wary of strangers, right? So, as a precaution, I put my guard up and maintain a low profile while I learn the lay of the land. Then I try to figure out who’s a gossip, who’s a snitch, who’s a buttinsky, a gasbag, a clinger, a pest. Watching and listening is a preventive measure.

So is waiting to do laundry until 10:00 at night; it reduces the chance of long awkward encounters with curious strangers. Laundry rooms can be deadly — what is there to do while you wait for the wash cycle to finish? If you’re me, you entertain yourself with a book or your phone. Others want to talk. I’ll go along with them, but I know how the conversation is destined to end. And I’m rarely wrong.

Around the World in Nine Photos

The WordPress.com Blog

It’s in the grip of North American winter that I often dream of escape to warmer climates. Thanks to the WordPress.com Reader and the street photography tag, I can satisfy my travel yen whenever it strikes. Here are just some of the amazing photos and photographers I stumbled upon during a recent armchair trip.

My first stop was Alexis Pazoumian’s fantastic SERIES: India at The Sundial Review. I loved the bold colors in this portrait and the man’s thoughtful expression.

Speaking of expressions, the lead dog in Holly’s photo from Maslin Nude Beach, in Adelaide, Australia, almost looks as though it’s smiling. See more of Holly’s work at REDTERRAIN.

Be Merry with This Year’s Holiday Theme and Wallpapers

The WordPress.com Blog

It’s hard to believe the year is already coming to a close. As 2014 ends, it’s time to celebrate the holiday season with our WordPress.com tradition of teaming up with talented artists to create a cheerful WordPress illustration. This year, Mads Berg has dreamed up a scene of togetherness to capture the spirit of the season.

Holiday theme

As in previous years, we’ve created a new seasonal theme for you based on the beautiful artwork. Automattic’s David Kennedy has adapted Mads’ illustration into a theme called Together. It is now available on WordPress.com, and will continue to be available even after the holidays.

The theme showcases the beautiful illustration in the header. Elements from the artwork are pulled in throughout the theme, like the sparkles glittering on sticky posts.

Together is the perfect theme if you want to spread a little holiday cheer. Gather with your friends and family this season, and share the moments on…

You still have a few days to register for Writing 201!

The Daily Post

We often think of blog posts as being just a few paragraphs long, or being a “less serious” kind of writing. Not so! In this challenge, we’ll focus on writing longform pieces that are equally at home on your blog or in a magazine. Whether you have trouble organizing your thoughts in longer pieces of writing or simply want to challenge yourself as a blogger, Writing 201: Beyond the Blog Post can help.

What is Writing 201: Beyond the Blog Post?

What does “longform” mean? That depends on what you think it is, but we generally use it to refer to writing that’s 1500 words or more.

Writing 201: Beyond the Blog Post is a four-week course to help those beginning to explore longer-form writing (or who are frustrated with their past attempts). Each week, we’ll focus on a different kind of piece, working our way from interviews — one of the easiest…
